"In spite of what Mother taught you about the benefits of eating broccoli, data collected by the U.S. government show that the nutritional content of America's vegetables and fruits has declined during the past 50 years -- in some cases dramatically.

"Donald Davis, a biochemist at the University of Texas, said that of 13 major nutrients in fruits and vegetables tracked by the Agriculture Department from 1950 to 1999, six showed noticeable declines -- protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin and vitamin C. The declines ranged from 6 percent for protein, 15 percent for iron, 20 percent for vitamin C, and 38 percent for riboflavin."

Why am I telling you this? Because, after two horribly uncomfortable years of living in university housing, we just heard today that our offer on the house of our dreams has been accepted. Which means I get to have a veggie garden again and stop relying on the horrible, tasteless crap at the supermarket or paying ridiculous prices for poorly-cared-for organic stuff. This is a very, very, very gooooood thing!

The house needs work, of course. We'll be ripping out the kitchen within the year, and there are half a dozen other projects we'll tackle after that. But it's pretty, it has lots of space, it's in a great location (walking distance to work, the town library, cafes, and friends), and best of all, a room of my own - my very own detached office/library where I can write my books, think deep thoughts, and fritter away time on LJ without anyone looking over my shoulder.

Is happy.

Is should be happy! "a room of my own - my very own detached office/library where I can write my books, think deep thoughts, and fritter away time on LJ without anyone looking over my shoulder."

With a door? sigh. SO envious. But hooray for the house, and the garden spot, and fresh produce! Congratulations!

Even better than a door. It used to be the back shed, completely detached from the main house, with a gas fireplace, a view of the garden, and a pretty little octagonal window. It currently has a sink, but we'll put in a full bathroom so it can double as a guest house. I'll have a desk, a comfy chair, a nice rug and lots of bookcases. Virginia would be proud.

Mr. Mochi gets the funky attic space for his office. The kids get the basement for a playroom (eventually, once we renovate that space).

We'll have to install intercoms so we don't lose track of each other!
