Warning,

Last night we had dinner on the beach, sitting in plastic chairs with our toes in the sand, watching a bright red sun sink into the ocean above a smooth crescent of white sand. Chilled beer with Thai seafood salad, chili squid, and a whole grilled fish, all fresh and beautifully flavored. After dinner I took a walk along the beach under the stars, calf-deep in gently lapping, bathwater-warm seawater with my three favorite people. Then we went back to our comfortable, air-conditioned bungalow to share the sweets I picked up in the local market a few hours earlier: banana paste in a thin, floury coating, pastry so light it melts filled with some sort of jam, and two kinds of coconut sweets steamed in bamboo leaves, one white and salty, surrounded by a thick, nutty paste, the other toasty and caramelized, nestled in a sweet, creamy gel. It was magic.

So far today we've had breakfast (prawn congee with shredded ginger, spring onion and toasted garlic - yummmmmm) and a play on the beach. We're resting up now for a strenuous afternoon of, umm, maybe riding into town and checking out the shops. Or not. This is the holiday portion of the oddessey, so we're taking it easy. This morning on the beach I had my hair done - three little braids with blue, red and purple beads. Just for fun. We'll see how long they last.

Tomorrow we head to Bangkok.
